X-ray iron line variability: constraints on the inner accretion disk
نویسنده
چکیده
After reviewing the basic physics of X-ray reflection in AGN, we present three case studies which illustrate the current state of X-ray reflection studies. For the low-luminosity AGN NGC 4258, we find that the iron line is much narrower than is typically found in higher luminosity AGN. We argue that this is evidence for either a truncated cold accretion disk (possibly due to a transition to an advection dominate accretion flow at r ∼ 100GM/c) or a large (r ∼ 100GM/c) X-ray emitting corona surrounding the accretion disk. We also present results for the higher luminosity Seyfert nuclei in NGC 5548 and MCG–6-30-15. In both of these sources, RXTE shows that the iron line equivalent width decreases with increasing luminosity. Furthermore, the iron line equivalent width is found to be anticorrelated with the relative strength of the reflection continuum, contrary to all simple reflection models. It is proposed that continuum-flux correlated changes in the ionization of the accretion disk surface can explain this spectral variability. Finally, we address the issue of X-ray iron line reverberation in the light of these complicating factors.

Accretion Processes in Agn : the X-ray View
We discuss constraints on the physics of the inner accretion disk, as well as the properties of the black hole itself, that can be derived by a detailed examination of the relativistically broadened spectral features (especially the fluorescent iron line) in the Seyfert galaxy MCG–6-30-15. To begin with, we show that spectral models which purport to eliminate the broad iron line in MCG–6-30-15 ...
متن کاملThe relativistic iron line profile in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy IC4329a
We present simultaneous ASCA and RXTE data on the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy IC4329a. The iron line is significantly broadened, but not to the extent expected from an accretion disk which extends down to the last stable orbit around a black hole. We marginally detect a narrow line component, presumably from the molecular torus, but even including this gives a line profile from the accretion disk w...
متن کاملX-ray iron line reverberation from black hole accretion disks
The relativistically broad X-ray iron line seen in many AGN spectra is thought to originate from the central regions of the putative black hole accretion disk. Both the line profile and strength will vary in response to rapid variability of the primary X-ray continuum source. The temporal response of the line contains information on the accretion disk structure, the X-ray source geometry, and t...
متن کاملSpecial relativistic e ects on the strength of the uorescentK iron line from black hole accretion disks
Special relativistic eeects on the strength of the uorescent K iron line from black hole accretion disks. ABSTRACT The broad iron K emission line, commonly seen in the X-ray spectrum of Seyfert nuclei, is thought to originate when the inner accretion disk is illuminated by an active disk-corona. We show that relative motion between the disk and the X-ray emitting material can have an important ...
متن کاملOn the Lack of X-ray Iron Line Reverberation in Mcg–6-30-15: Implications for the Black Hole Mass and Accretion Disk Structure
We use the method of Press, Rybicki & Hewitt (1992) to search for time lags and time leads between different energy bands of the RXTE data for MCG–6-30-15. We tailor our search in order to probe any reverberation signatures of the fluorescent iron K line that is thought to arise from the inner regions of the black hole accretion disk. In essence, an optimal reconstruction algorithm is applied t...
